These products were banned September 1, 2023


Single-use plastic bowls (designed not to have a lid) and single-use plastic plates are prohibited from sale, supply and distribution in South Australia.

Key information to note about this upcoming ban:

  • A single-use plastic bowl means a bowl designed without a spill-proof lid. Plastic bowls designed or intended to have a lid are considered ‘food containers’ and will be addressed by the 2024 (Stage 4) bans and restrictions.
  • Single-use plastic trays and single-use plastic serving platters can continue to be sold, supplied and distributed in South Australia until further notice. These products are not considered single-use plastic plates.
  • Exemptions apply for:
    • single-use cardboard or fibreboard bowls and plates that are lined or coated with plastic. These products can continue to be sold, supplied and distributed in South Australia until 31 October 2024.
    • single-use plastic bowls required for medical (including veterinary), scientific, forensic or law enforcement purposes only and are not used for serving food to people.

Plastic-stemmed cotton buds may not be sold for cleaning ears, beauty or cosmetic purposes, or general domestic uses.

Exemptions are in place to allow the continued sale, supply, and distribution of plastic-stemmed cotton buds for the following purposes:

  • medical (including veterinary) 
  • scientific 
  • forensic 
  • law enforcement

Plastic Pizza Savers. Plastic devices used to prevent the lid of a pizza box from sticking to the pizza are prohibited from sale, supply and distribution in South Australia.
